Genoa in the mid-19th century drew a handful of outside makers without ever really producing a school of its own — the Frenchman Pierre Pacherele passed through, as did Antonio Gibertini of Parma, and Piedmont-born Ludovico Rastelli (1801–1878) settled there from the 1830s, doing more repair work than original making and leaving too thin and stylistically scattered a body of work, alongside the others, to add up to anything resembling a local tradition.
