Christian Hans-Karl Schmidt was born in Erlbach, Saxony, in 1940. He was apprenticed to Kurt Dölling from 1955 to 1958 and subsequently worked with Emil Kühnel in Bubenreuth and Siegfried Finkel in Brienz before returning to Dölling’s workshop. In 1969, he received two gold medals at the international competition in Liège. One of the leading German bow makers of his generation, Schmidt also became a respected authority on the German tradition and co-authored the two-volume reference work *Deutsche Bogenmacher* with Klaus Grünke and Wolfgang Zunterer.
