Christian Hans-Karl Schmidt was born in Erlbach, Saxony, in 1940. He was apprenticed to Kurt Dölling from 1955 to 1958 and subsequently worked with Emil Kühnel in Bubenreuth and Siegfried Finkel in Brienz before returning to Dölling’s workshop. In 1969, he received two gold medals at the international competition in Liège. He established his own workshop in Dresden in 1974, producing bows inspired principally by the work of Tourte, Voirin and the Knopf family. One of the leading German bow makers of his generation, Schmidt also became a respected authority on the German tradition and co-authored the two-volume reference work *Deutsche Bogenmacher* with Klaus Grünke and Wolfgang Zunterer. His sons, Jochen and Daniel Schmidt, continued the family’s bow-making tradition.
