Giuseppe Desiato (1826–1907) worked from via Speranzella, a short walk from the young Vincenzo Postiglione's own premises — the two had come up together under the same teacher, Vincenzo Jorio, before going their separate ways in business. Neither man had the field entirely to himself: Alfonso della Corte and, more rarely, Francesco Verzella were both cutting instruments in Naples around the same years, none of them especially prolific by comparison with the earlier golden age of Neapolitan making. Desiato's own output leans plain and unfussy rather than ambitious, and — a common fate for this whole generation — plenty of it has since resurfaced under grander, older Neapolitan names once the original labels were swapped out.
