Francesco Verzella
Violin maker
(1840 – 1928)
Francesco Verzella was a pupil of Antonio Gagliano (II) and created Stradivari and Amati models in the style of Gagliano, with varnish of mediocre quality featuring red- and golden-brown hues. He made various types of plucked instruments in Istanbul and several of his instruments were labeled for Vincenzo Gagliano. Verzella was also a teacher of Armando Altavilla and may have advised Vincenzo Sannino. He worked in various locations in Naples, including Largo S. Antoniello a Costantinopoli, which has led to the misconception that he moved to Constantinople.
