Giacomo Gennaro was a pupil and assistant of Nicolò Amati from 1641 to 1646 and likely continued to contribute to the workshop long after that, although he was no longer living in the Amati house. His own work is rare, with several interesting contralto violas being his best-known creations; these reflect the earlier generations of the Amati family more than the work of his master Nicolò. The scroll ...Read More resembles those of Andrea Guarneri, while the soundholes feature short narrow wings akin to those of Andrea Amati. It cannot be proven whether this was a deliberate effort to create instruments in an older style to meet the demand for well-aged instruments. A few violins are also documented.
