Tomaso Eberle
Violin maker
(1725 – c. after 1792)
Only recently has credible biographical information concerning
the violin makers of the Neapolitan school come to light. Until the experts who have researched this material publish their archival findings, we leave the birth and death dates of these makers as previously accepted.
One of the most important makers of the 18th century Neapolitan school, Tomaso Eberle was born near the Tyrolean violin making center of Füssen. He probably arrived in Naples sometime before taking up violin making, but the circumstances surrounding the move are unclear. It is likely that Eberle studied with Nicolò Gagliano, though there are also resemblances in his work to that of other members of the Gagliano family, especially Gennaro. In any case, the details of craftsmanship in Eberle's work are noticeably different from his teacher's: f-holes are less fluid and scrolls are more refined.
