Gaetano Chiocchi
Violin maker
(1814 – c. 1881)
Gaetano Chiocchi was a violinist and musical director at the Teatro Grande in Padua. He learned violin making from Giuseppe Ceruti around 1858. He received medals in Florence in 1861 and in Padua. His instruments featured broad Guarneri and Maggini models with open 'c' bouts, wide purfling that occasionally consisted of five strands instead of the usual three, and a good symmetrical and concentric scroll with a very restricted throat and delicate chamfer. A fine soft red varnish was applied with a shaded finish. He was not prolific.
