Gaetano Chiocchi
Violin maker
(1814 – c. 1881)
Gaetano Chiocchi studied philosophy and medicine before taking up violin making in Padua, and it is not known who taught him, though his earliest signed instrument dates from 1858. His body of work is small, but shows care of execution and beautiful varnish of a vibrant red-orange hue. Classical Cremonese and Brescian models are most common, especially Stradivari and a double-purfled large Maggini pattern. In general the sound quality is impressive. Most examples bear numbered labels.
