Oswald Anton Schilbach
Violin maker

Oswald Anton Schilbach was a pupil of E. W. Neumarker and was active in Hamburg and Schoneck starting in 1880. In 1887, he emigrated to New York, where he worked for Herman Koenig and then for Victor Flechter from 1889. He established his own business independently from 1894 to 1937. His son Anton assisted him and eventually succeeded him. He was both a maker and repairer, known for fine professional work. He created about 25 violins, six violas, and two cellos based on Stradivari models, using a rich red-brown varnish.
