Fabrizio Senta

Fabrizio Senta (1629–1681) was one of the earliest known violin makers active in Turin and an important figure in the formation of the Piedmontese school. His instruments combine an essentially Italian, Amati-inspired appearance with constructional methods inherited from earlier lute and guitar making. The ribs may be set into channels cut into the back, while the neck and upper block could be constructed as a single unit, features characteristic of early Turin making and ultimately related to Franco-Flemish and German traditions. Senta’s work is generally distinguished by relatively high, narrow arching, long projecting corners and soundholes placed rather close to the edges. His varnish is often a fine golden-brown.

Very few instruments by Senta survive, and his work has at times been confused with that of Cattenar and later Turin makers such as Giovanni Francesco Celoniati. Nevertheless, the surviving examples reveal a distinctive and accomplished maker whose style helped establish a more recognizably Italian character in early Piedmontese violin making. Later Turin makers appear to have absorbed aspects of his approach, making him an important transitional figure in the development of the local school.

Among the most notable instruments associated with Senta is a cello dated 1667, traditionally known as the “Medici,” preserved in Florence. His small surviving output makes securely attributed examples particularly significant for understanding the origins of violin making in Turin before the emergence of the better-known Piedmontese makers of the 18th century.
