Andrea Gatto
Violin maker
(fl. 1660 – 1670)
Andrea Gatto was an interesting and rare maker from the early Turin school, influenced by styles from northern Europe. Ribs were set into the edges of the back in the manner of early Dutch, English, and Germanic makers. The outline was elegant, featuring an Amatisé form with slightly hooked corners that were extended. Count Cozio de Salabue described a viola with high arching, flat in the center, imprecise purfling, large and long soundholes, a back without figure, and a fair tone.
