Giuseppe Sgarbi
Violin maker
(1818 – 1905)
Rome had gone without a real maker of note since Giulio Cesare Gigli's day until Giuseppe Sgarbi arrived from Finale Emilia around 1878, bringing with him a personal, somewhat unpolished style already well outside Bologna's mainstream. He worked the city until about 1890 alongside his son Antonio, and something of Gigli's old Roman feel survives in his work even filtered through Sgarbi's own rougher hand. He lived to 1905, born in 1818.
