Giuseppe Sgarbi
Violin maker
(1818 – 1905)
Giuseppe Sgarbi was known as `Jarino'. He was active in Finale Emilia from 1841 to 1890, later moving to Modena and finally to Rome. His modeling was broad and rather flat, featuring personal models with a low arch. The workmanship and design were rather careless, yet he was generally well-regarded. He used broad purfling set close to the edge and created soundholes with exaggerated ovality across the lower circles. His varnish was a good transparent red-brown with a polished finish, and he often used very plain materials.
