Antonio Sgarbi
                                    Violin maker
                                    (1866 – 1938)

Antonio Sgarbi was the son and pupil of Giuseppe Giuseppe Sgarbi. The family moved to Rome in 1878, where Antonio worked in his father's workshop until 1905, when he became luthier to the Bellini Conservatoire in Palermo, a position he held until 1911. After a brief period in Modena, he returned to Rome, later operating as Sgarbi and Sons. His work, characterized by a polished golden-orange or yellow varnish, was often loose and graceless but well finished, achieving effective low archings. An example of his work is the Antonius Sgarbi D01710 Finalio in Aemilia / Fecit Romae An. 19.. A. M. S.
