Carl Joseph Hellmer
Violin maker

Carl Joseph Hellmer was the son of Johann Georg Hellmer. He was a pupil and assistant of Ulrich Eberle. He played and composed for the lute and mandolin. He was an active violin maker starting in 1763. His work on Stainer and Stradivari models was excellent. He was regarded as one of the best makers of the Prague school. He used good yellow-brown or dark opaque red spirit varnish.
