Carl C. Holzapfel emigrated to the USA in 1892. He established himself in Baltimore in 1898. He used Stradivari, Amati, and Guarneri models with suitable shades of varnish. Local materials were utilized, occasionally featuring five-stranded purfling. He was a very prolific maker and also crafted bows and plucked instruments. Some of his instruments were branded on the pegbox with 'C. Holzapfel. '.
