John Menzies
(c. 1820 – 1834)
John Menzies was associated with Daniel Dewar of Edinburgh. He produced a small output of very interesting work. A large model exhibited Guadagnini characteristics and was also influenced by Matthew Hardie. The instruments featured flat edges, extended lower wings to the soundholes, and a slightly pinched but low arch. Some of them were purfled only on the table. They had a distinctive scroll that was rather narrow across the eyes. His workmanship was very good throughout, utilizing fine red-brown varnish and quality materials.
