Leo Mayr
Violin maker
(1928 – 1981)
Leo Mayr trained at Mittenwald under M. Klotz, H. Karner, and L. Hornsteiner. He subsequently worked for J. Padewet and H. Glassl. In 1957, he established himself independently in Ingoldstadt and took over the shop of his former teacher H. Glassl in Munich in 1972. He completed over 200 violins, 76 violas, and 12 cellos, using his own personal model as well as those of classical Italian makers. He utilized very fine materials, ebony purfling, and rich oil varnish in various appropriate shades.
