Benoit initially trained as a musician, graduating in violin and music theory from the Conservatoires de Paris and Versailles at the age of sixteen. Later on, he studied composition at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, before taking up bowmaking in Mirecourt under Bernard Ouchard from 1971 until 1975.

He opened his own studio in Paris the following year, and became the youngest person ever ...Read More to be nominated Meilleur Ouvrier de France.
He moved to the Island of Bréhat in 1982, and became Maitre d’Art in 1983.
He received a First Prize at Paris Musicora in 1994 for his novel design of carbon fiber bows, distributed under the trademark Spiccato®.
In the year 2000, he made his bow number 1000.

Established in Boston since 2001, he become a MacArthur Fellow in 2012.
He received the distinction Chevalier des Arts & des Lettres in 2017. Read Less
