Estimates of his annual productivity vary as he devoted much of his time to repairs, but in 1884 he began to number his instruments, and in 1916 arrived at number 218. His preferred models were sturdy interpretations of the famous Cremonese makers. The varnish, which is of an oil-based texture that retained its softness in the English climate, is usually some variety of red.
