Béla Szepessy
Violin maker
(1856 – 1925)
After his apprenticeship with Alajos Engleder and Samuel Nemessányi, Hungarian violin maker Béla Szepessy went to work for Thomas Zach in Vienna from 1874 to 1879. After a probable stint in Munich, he relocated to London, where he remained for 40 years. Estimates of his annual productivity vary as he devoted much of his time to repairs, but in 1884 he began to number his instruments, and in 1916 arrived at number 218. His preferred models were sturdy interpretations of the famous Cremonese makers. The varnish, which is of an oil-based texture that retained its softness in the English climate, is usually some variety of red. Overall his work is among the most highly regarded of the Hungarian makers.
