August Riechers



(1836 – 1893)

August Riechers was a violin and bow maker. He was the son of Reichers from Hanover and was recognized as one of the finest German makers of the 19th century. He apprenticed with C. F. Ficker in Markneukirchen, collaborated with Bausch in Leipzig, and established his own business in Hanover in 1862. In 1872, he relocated to Berlin on the recommendation of the violinist Joachim. He was appointed luthier ...Read More to the Hochschule in Berlin. He was credited with producing approximately 2, 000 violins and 200 cellos, utilizing Stradivari and Guarneri models. He followed Bagatella's notes and exclusively used spirit varnish. His work featured fine craftsmanship and materials. He was a highly regarded restorer with extensive experience in classical work. He authored Die Geige und ihr Bate (Göttingen, 1892). His bows were branded: A. RIECHERS. Early instruments were branded: 'A. Riechers Hannover'.
