War may well have cut short Alfred Lamy's career before illness finished the job — mobilised in 1914 like every other man of his generation, he is thought to have come home gassed, which would explain why he died at only thirty-six, in December 1922, not long after finding what work he could at Laberte's. To distinguish him from his more famous uncle, Joseph Alfred Lamy père (whose two sons, Hippolyte ...Read More Camille and Georges-Léon, made Alfred their first cousin as well as nephew), he's remembered simply as "neveu." Born in Mirecourt in 1886 to Joseph Jean Baptiste Lamy and Céleste Renaudin, he trained with Bazin at home before a stint under Jacquot in Nancy and then several years, 1906 to 1911, at Cuniot-Hury — and it shows: his own bows from 1912–14 sit so close to Louis Bazin's work that the two men were almost certainly acquainted, and possibly collaborators. He married Emilie Justine Lagrave in 1906, went out on his own around 1919–20 under his own brand, and left behind, for such a short career, a genuinely well-regarded handful of bows. Read Less
