Sebastian Klotz I
Violin maker
(1696 – 1775)
Sebastian Klotz, son of Matthias Klotz, was a distinguished craftsman from the Mittenwald family of violin makers. He produced a violin labeled as "Haynes" and sold by Haynes & Co., London, around 1907, identified with the number 152. Klotz's work is characterized by precision and grace, featuring moderately high arches, fine purfling, and edgework. Throughout his career, he employed a variety of attractive varnishes. Manuscript labels were predominant before 1730, while printed labels became more common afterward. Klotz's brother Johann Karl and son Georg Karl also contributed to the family's legacy in violin making.
