Sebastian Klotz I
Violin maker
(1696 – 1775)
Son of Matthias Klotz, Sebastian Klotz was one of the finest craftsmen in this Mittenwald family of violin makers. His work, which is often on Amati or Stainer model, is precise and graceful, with moderately high arches, fine purfling and edgework. Klotz used a wide variety of varnishes throughout his career, but most of them are very attractive. Manuscript labels predominate before 1730, while printed ones are more common after that date. Klotz' brother Johann Karl and son Georg Karl were also prominent makers in the family tradition.
