Georg Karl Klotz
Violin maker
(1723 – 1797)
Mittenwald violin maker George Karl Klotz is sometimes designated a descendant of Matthias I, but expert opinion is divided on the question, and he may not have been part of that branch of the famous family. Like other makers of the Mittenwald school, his work shows a preference for Amati models. It is elegant and precise, with low arching and relatively flat edges. Varnish is usually a dark reddish-brown. Many of his instruments are somewhat large, over 36 cm, and are often signed to the upper back near the block with his name and the probable name of his home, "Grigen." Handwritten and manuscript labels exist, usually with the name "Georg Klotz."
