Johann Carl Klotz was the son of Mathias Klotz (I) and is believed to have been a pupil of his half-brother Sebastian. He trained one apprentice, Phillip Sailer, from c. 1737 to 1742, as well as his sons, Wolfgang and Michael. Although his execution was less disciplined than that of some family members, he produced refined and well-crafted work similar to that of Amati. His instruments featured Cremonese soundholes and a characteristic head with a small inner volute and an extended last turn. The arching near the edges is flat and rises toward the middle, with varnish that is often a reddish brown, thin, and intense in color, resembling a more Amati-like golden-brown. Manuscript labels were used up to 1750; thereafter, they were printed: Ioan. Carol Kloz, in / Mittenvvald, An 1752.
