Ladislav Kaplan
Violin maker

Ladislav Kaplan emigrated to New York in 1893 and made his first violin in 1895. He was in business as Muller & Kaplan in 1922. In 1929, he established himself independently in South Norwalk, Connecticut, where he founded the Kaplan Musical String Co., which continues to produce strings successfully. He produced more than two hundred instruments based on a Stradivari model, as well as several large violas measuring 17 inches (43. 2 cm) and two cellos. His varnish was a fine golden-yellow or orange oil, and he sometimes used a hard spirit varnish of dark red color.
