Lorenzo Ventapane, nephew of Vincenzo Ventapane, was a significant maker in the Neapolitan tradition, presumed to be a pupil of Giovanni or Nicolo (II) Gagliano. He used a glossy golden or yellow-brown varnish and beech purfling set in broad flat edges. Soundholes were widely set, maintaining a good Stradivari form, while scrolls were cut quickly and crudely. Although the materials were generally of basic quality, his cellos were particularly prized for their proportions and effectiveness.
