Joseph Vautrin apprenticed as a violin maker to Chipot-Vuillaume in Mirecourt. He was appointed head of the workshop of Emile Germain in Paris. In 1892, he established himself independently in Mirecourt, later moving to 8 rue Laloy, Chaumont in 1894. His work featured a Stradivari-derived model and included fine professional craftsmanship with a large distinctive scroll. He used dark red varnish. Several viols and viola d'amores were also recorded before 1914. Joseph Vautrin fecit / Chaumont anno 19.. J. V.
