Joseph Vautrin apprenticed as a violin maker to Chipot-Vuillaume in Mirecourt. He was appointed head of the workshop of Emile Germain in Paris. In 1892, he established himself independently in Mirecourt, later moving to 8 rue Laloy, Chaumont in 1894.
