Matthys Hofmans
Violin maker
(c. 1660 – 1720)
Labels have been reported as early as 1619 and as late as 1740, leading to speculation that there might be two makers with the same name, possibly a father and son. Several instruments, including violins, pochettes, violas, and a theorbo dated 1619, are found in the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels. They were made very finely in the Amati style, featuring a similar golden amber varnish that is somewhat harder in texture, with some exhibiting a darker red tone.
