Johann Christian Hoffmann
Violin maker
(c. 1710 – 1750)
Johann Christian Hoffmann was an important maker of viols and plucked instruments. He created some violins and violas based on the Stainer model, as well as double basses. Several five-string viola pomposas, which are large violas with an additional E string, were said to have been made for J. S. Bach, with examples found in the Leipzig Museum. His instruments featured fine golden-brown varnish.
