Nicholas Vasich
Violin maker
(b. 1891)
Nicholas Vasich studied under Bela Truppel in Novi Sad, Serbia before attending school in Markneukirchen, Germany. He later worked for Jan Dvorak and D. Dimitrijevic in Prague. During World War I, he deserted from the Austrian Army and settled in St. Petersburg. (Wenberg also suggests he spent time in Shanghai and Manchukuo, China. ) He emigrated to the USA in 1924, working in Seattle, Washington, and established himself in Baltimore, Maryland in 1933. His instruments included Stradivari, Guarneri, and personal models, as well as lower grade work modeled on Bergonzi and Guadagnini. He developed his own balsam-oil varnish with a chippy texture, often featuring a shaded finish. He was credited with approximately 350 violins in six different grades. His lesser work was branded as 'Vasich', while the better grades were branded below the button as 'N. Vasich'.
