Charles Tourte

Bow maker
(c. 1770 – before 1816)

Charles Tourte, known in the trade as "Tourte T." to distinguish him from his more celebrated half-uncle, was born around 1770–1775, the son of Nicolas Léonard Tourte ("l'Aîné") from his first marriage, to Catherine Audry. He married Elisabeth Toupot in May 1793; she survived him, dying in July 1816, by which time Charles ...Read More himself was already dead. He very probably began an apprenticeship in bow making under his own father, though how much he actually produced independently remains uncertain — the surviving record of his work is thin. A comparison of surviving bows has led some to suspect a working connection with Jean Adam, though the exact nature of that relationship, if it existed at all, is not documented. Read Less
