Richard Tobin

Richard Tobin was born in Ireland, where he is thought to have apprenticed with Thomas Perry and worked independently before moving to London with the encouragement of Vincenzo Panormo sometime before 1810.

In the 1810s he seems to have worked ...Read More for Henry Lockey Hill before setting up his own shop in 1823.

His elegant scrolls are perhaps the most recognizable and finest element of his work, which he supplied to John Betts and Thomas Dodd under their labels. Pochettes were also part of his output. He often used Stradivari and Amati models, but the varnish varies considerably as Tobin often furnished shops with instruments in the white. Read Less
