Hans Tietgen was self-taught, receiving some guidance from C. G. Adam in Berlin. He emigrated to the USA in 1886 and established himself in New York. He produced approximately 500 instruments based on Stradivari and Guarneri models, as well as a personal model influenced by Brescian ideas. His fine oil varnish came in various shades. In his early period, he produced several double basses. Manuscript labels were used prior to 1901.
