Carlo Giuseppe Testore
Violin maker
(c. 1660 – 1716)
Carlo Giuseppe Testore was not only the first in this family of Milanese makers, but also its finest craftsman. His work shows the strong influence of Giovanni Grancino, who is said to have taught him. More personal touches can be seen in the longer corners and distinctive scroll shape characteristic of the Testore family in general. Volutes typically have a diagonal bulge, which is quite different from the symmetrical design of Grancino's scrolls. Cellos by this maker are especially well regarded.
