Casper Strnad
Violin maker
(1752 – 1823)
Casper Strnad was a pupil of T. Hulinzky. He exhibited notable workmanship and was among the first of the Prague school to adopt the Cremonese form, generally working on a large Stradivari pattern characterized by low arching and fullness to the edges. A Stainer model was retained for the scroll. The soundholes were frequently set low on the body, reminiscent of Bergonzi in style and disposition. He typically used materials of choice quality. The varnish was well-coloured in appropriate shades, being transparent and refractive. His recorded and extant works included violas, cellos, double basses, and guitars. His label was often imitated in commercially produced factory instruments.
