Pietro Sgarabotto was the son and pupil of Gaetano Sgarabotto, working as a violinist and maker in Vicenza in 1920 and in Parma in 1930. He taught at the Parma Violin Making School from 1928 to 1932 and alongside his father from 1929 to 1936, later teaching at the Cremona School from 1959 to 1973.
