Léon Bernardel was the son and pupil of Ernest Auguste Bernardel. Before joining his family at Gand et Bernardel Freres, he worked with Derazey. In 1899, he opened his own shop at 40 Faubourg Poissonniere, collaborating with his son Léon (II). In 1914, he became a director of Couesnon and Co., musical exporters.
