Samuel 'Luthier' Rosenthal was a violin and bow maker. He was the son and pupil of Joseph Rosenthal starting in 1901. He emigrated to the USA in 1906. While working as a repairer for Wurlitzer in Cincinnati, he also made new instruments outside the shop. After serving in the military during World War I, he established himself independently in New York in 1918. He created over 100 violins based on the Stradivari model, featuring orange varnish and branded with `SNR'.
