Vincenzo Postiglione was presumed to be the son and pupil of Vincenzo Postiglione (I). He apprenticed to Vincenzo Jorio from 1847 to 1852 and established himself independently in Naples in 1855. As one of the leading Italian makers of the 19th century, he created convincing copies of Nicolas Gagliano with appropriate varnish, while also producing Guarneri models featuring darker red-brown varnish, as well as Stradivari and Guadagnini models. He was credited with 278 violins, 60 violas, 115 cellos, 29 double basses, nine viola d'amores, and 14 viols. Some instruments were branded on the back button: '13'. Vincentius Postiglione / one fecit Neapoli Anno 18.. His shop was continued by his sons starting in 1910.
