Marcel Demey was a pupil of Pierre Jean Henri Hel from 1909 and later served as his assistant until Hel's death in 1937. He continued to work at Hel's shop until 1943 for Hel's widow before establishing his own business in Lille. A French jury awarded him a gold medal for craftsmanship. His Cremonese models were limited in number due to his work as a restorer and repairer, and they were signed internally on the back and front, branded: 'cM. Demey à Lille'
