William Calow
Violin maker
(1847 – 1910)
William Calow was a collector and maker of double basses. He established a shop in Sussex Street. The instruments featured a viol-shaped form with extended Guarneri- or Maggini-like soundholes and an orange-brown oil varnish. Approximately 20 were produced, and some violins and cellos were also known. An eccentric bass bar, cut in the lower bouts, had flared ends.
