Maurice Mermillot apprenticed to Gaillard in Mirecourt. He was employed by Buthod in Paris in 1852 and moved to Rennes in 1853. In 1861, he worked for N. Vuillaume in Mirecourt. While on military service in Turin from 1855 to 1860, he possibly became acquainted with A. Guadagnini (Vannes) and subsequently produced work for him.
