Gaspar Borbon
Violin maker
(fl. 1673 – 1705)
Gaspar Borbon was an interesting and important maker of the early Flemish school. His work was apparently influenced by Gasparo da Salò. He demonstrated fine craftsmanship and finish, featuring a rich, well-textured varnish in various shades, including deep orange-red. The instruments typically had a very full rounded arch and prominent, wide-set curving soundholes. The volute of the scroll exhibited a wide second turn. Two violins dated 1694 and 1698 are extant. A viola was labelled.
