Giovanni Longiaru
Violin maker

Giovanni Longiaru trained as a wood carver with Gottardo in Venice and studied violin making with G. V. Pezzoni in Cremona. He served as a repairer for the Conservatoire in Venice. In 1904, he emigrated to New York and became a repairer for the conservatoire there. He completed approximately 270 instruments, which were copies of master instruments. His fine workmanship featured a gold-red varnish of his own formulation. He developed the 'Tongiarised Process' for enhanced bass bar function. In the early part of his career, he also made bows.
