Pier Angelo Balzarini

Pier Angelo Balzarini (1962–2002) was a distinguished Cremonese violin maker. Born in Cremona, he attended the city’s International School of Violin Making from 1976 to 1980, studying with Primo Pistoni, Wanna Zambelli and Alceste Bulfari. Balzarini achieved considerable success in international competitions. He won a silver medal for a viola at Cremona in 1985, a prize for the finest scroll at Poznań in 1986, and a gold medal for a cello at the 1988 Cremona Triennale, where he also received the Stauffer Prize for tone and the Sacconi Prize. His relatively limited output—estimated at around 100 instruments—was based principally on classical Cremonese models and is distinguished by precise workmanship, carefully chosen materials, attractive varnish and a strong tonal response.
