John Atkins
Violin maker
(1848 – 1919)
John Atkins was an engineer and an amateur violin maker and collector during his retirement. He opened a professional atelier in his final years but died unexpectedly. His output was limited, including one complete quartet that demonstrated good craftsmanship yet was stylistically unrefined. The materials he used were rather meager and locally sourced, and the varnish was unattractive. He branded his work under the endpin as `J. Atkins, Sheffield'.
