Aegidius Sebastian Klotz
Violin maker
(1733 – 1805)
Aegidius Sebastian Klotz is one of the best makers in the family tradition that founded the Mittenwald school of violin making. As with many other members of the family, Sebastian hewed closely to an Amati model, but in keeping with his father Sebastian I's work, Aegidius Sebastian's instruments have flatter arches than the usual Stainer model. Details are graceful and refined, with purfling set in rather deep edges. Klotz used a variety of varnishes, most of which are exquisite. Many examples bear Stainer labels. In general, works by this family are frequently copied or forged by lesser makers.
