Dante Baldoni
Violin maker
(1868 – 1940)
Dante Baldoni, a self-taught Italian maker from Numana in the Marche region, emigrated to Buenos Aires around 1900. His reputation attracted commissions from notable musicians such as Ferenc von Vecsey and Jan Kubelik, for whom he created a copy of the Stradivari 'Emperor' violin. Baldoni also worked on copies of the 1717 Stradivari 'Emperor' model, Carcassi, and his own personal designs. His craftsmanship was distinguished by the use of native South American wood, an external mould that resulted in tapering rib corners, ebony purfling, full arching, and a fine, red-brown spirit varnish.
