Daniel Dewar
Violin maker
–
Daniel Dewar was a musician and violin maker. He was a friend of Matthew Hardie. He was listed at various addresses in Edinburgh: Burnet's Close in 1786, Toddrick's Wynd starting in 1788, Chalmer's Close from 1799, and Shakespeare Square from 1805. His last relocation occurred in 1825 to High Terrace, Leith. He produced good honest work based on the Amatise or Stainer model, featuring a scroll with an additional half-turn behind the eye. The varnish was a fine red-brown. There was no label, but he signed on the interior. Occasionally, he branded below the back button with 'Dewar. '.
