John Raeburn
Violin maker
–
John Raeburn was the eldest brother of Alexander and George Raeburn. He worked as a miner, was a violinist, and made violins part-time. He was the most successful maker in the family, credited with over 100 instruments across various models, often utilizing a good Stradivari pattern. His style was quite refined, though the narrow edge and crudely managed purfling corners revealed his amateur status. The instruments were particularly well finished, featuring a fine and carefully applied red-brown oil varnish. He received bronze medals at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Exhibitions and was highly regarded locally.
